Link to The Weekend Australian ARTEXPRESS Review

Hi everyone here is the link to The Weekend Australian's review. It's an interesting article that expands beyond the exhibition to discuss the teaching of art and the syllabus. Thanks for alerting us to it Tessa.

So anyone with drawing talent is civilized, people who 'stick things together' are lowly idiots?

"...art (including literature and music) is really the human mind's most immediate, intimate and intuitive way of thinking about human experience..."

But, "you do have to draw as you are told"? How do you define masterful drawer/painter? Everybody has a different opinion and if you're going to say that one form or technique is better than another then you're just being pretentious.
It's like saying classical music is better than pop music. There's no way to measure it, nobody can possibly experience the same thing as another person. You might be deeply moved by pop music and feel nothing when it comes to classical music. Who can tell you that your experience is wrong? Who can tell you that your experience is less valuable? Rubbish? Meaningless? Get off your tower.
That article just re-affirms how pretentious everybody is when it comes to art and their definitions of it.

"The religion of art makes people worse, because it encourages contempt for those considered inartistic." - JOHN CAREY

big fat ditto on that one, this writer is making some pretty stupid statements about 'what art is' in terms of how that relates to people individually. also ignoring individual perception of the world. half a star.
